Construction material rising cost and global demand for economically-sustainable and environmentally-friendly building resources have necessitated the use of sawdust-cement composite. Wood constituents and cement incompatibility hinder its production and need careful selection of the timber. Sawdust suitability from Triplochiton scleroxylon, Entandrophragma cylindricum and Klainedoxa gabonensis for wood-cement composite was determined by identifying their chemical constituents and their composites’ physico-mechanical properties. T. scleroxylon recorded the minimum total extractive (6.12%), lignin (29.89%) and holocellulose (56.38%) and K. gabonensis the maximum (9.31, 31.59 and 57.5% respectively). Ash content was higher for T. scleroxylon (7.6%) but lower for K. gabonensis (1.53%). T. scleroxylon boards were stronger [Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) = 696.1 N/m2] and more moisture-resistant [Moisture Absorption (MA) = 8.8%] than E. cylindricum (MOE = 625.9 N/m2; MA = 9.5%). K. gabonensis boards crushed after manufacturing due to its incompatibility with cement. T. scleroxylon sawdust is suitable for wood-cement composites due to its more compatible chemical constituents (i.e., lower extractive, lignin, holocellulose contents and more ash) and its boards’ excellent physico-mechanical properties than those for the other timbers. Sympatric populations occur in many freshwater fish species; such populations are typically detected through morphological distinctions that are often coupled to food niche and genetic separations. In salmonids, trophic and genetically separate sympatric populations have been reported in landlocked Arctic char, whitefish and brown trout. In Arctic char and brown trout rare cases of sympatric, genetically distinct populations have been detected based on genetic data alone, with no apparent morphological differences, that is “cryptic” structuring. It remains unknown whether such cryptic, sympatric structuring can be coupled to food niche separation. Here, we perform an extensive screening for trophic divergence of two genetically divergent, seemingly cryptic, sympatric brown trout populations documented to remain in stable sympatry over several decades in two interconnected, tiny mountain lakes in a nature reserve in central Sweden. We investigate body shape, body length, gill raker metrics, breeding status and diet (stomach content analysis and stable isotopes) in these populations. We find small significant differences for body shape, body size and breeding status, and no evidence of food niche separation between these two populations. In contrast, fish in the two lakes differed in body shape, diet, and nitrogen and carbon isotope signatures despite no genetic difference between lakes. These genetically divergent populations apparently coexist using the same food resources and showing the same adaptive plasticity to the local food niches of the two separate lakes. Antimicrobial polypeptides (AMPPs) are increasingly recognized as a critical component of innate host defense. Among the AMPPs,
polypeptides related to histones have been identified from many animals. Using peptide mapping, we further confirm the identity
of two histone-like proteins from fish as members of the H2B (sunshine bass) and H1 (rainbow trout) histone groups. We optimized
the conditions for measuring rainbow trout HLP-1/H2B via sandwich ELISA. We used two antibodies, one to the amino terminus
and one to the carboxyl terminus, of trout histone H2B, as the capture antibodies, and we used peroxidase-labeled antibody
raised to calf histone H2B as the secondary antibody. Specificity of the detecting antibody was confirmed by specific reactivity
with histone H2B in tissue extracts via western blotting. The test was reproducible and capable of detecting as little as
5 ng of histone H2B (0.05 μg/ml). Histone H2B levels expressed in gill tissue of juvenile, healthy rainbow trout were well
within concentrations that are lethal to important fish pathogens. However, there was a significant, age (size)-dependent
decline in histone H2B concentrations as fish matured, until levels became virtually undetectable in market-size fish. In
contrast, levels in skin appeared to remain high and unchanged in small versus large fish. Antibacterial activity in skin
and gill tissues was closely correlated with histone H2B concentration measured via ELISA, which supports our previous finding

Hybrids with high grain yield and higher starch, protein, or oil content are available to corn growers; however, they result from crossing adapted Corn Belt inbred lines that rarely include exotic germplasm. This study was conducted to determine whether Corn Belt lines introgressed with exotic materials from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Cuba, and Florida have appropriate wet‐milling characteristics in their hybrids. Ten lines from the Germplasm Enhancement of Maize (GEM) project with different starch contents were crossed to three adapted inbred lines used as testers. The B73×Mo17 hybrid was used as a control. The F1 generation of these 30 experimental hybrids was analyzed using both near‐infrared transmittance (NIT) technology and a 100‐g modified wet‐milling procedure, and measuring test and 1,000‐kernel weight. There was great variation among physical, compositional, and wet‐milling characteristics of the experimental hybrids, suggesting that exotic germplasm can be used to improve wet‐milling characteristics of Corn Belt hybrids. 相似文献
